At this year’s Cannes one of most highly acclaimed films was Another Year. The film is directed by Mike Leigh who gave us films like Naked, Secret and Lies and most recently Happy Go Lucky. He really has been challenging his own form in the last couple of years.

He seems to have perfected it once again in Another Year. The film is certainly going to be hilarious and heartbreaking. Mike Leigh is known to take characters from the smallest roles and makes them resounding successes.

The new film stars Jim Broadbent, Lesley Manville, Ruth Sheen and Imelda Staunton. The critics have lost their minds over this one and we can’t wait ourselves. Check out the trailer above and tell us what you think.

Meryl Streep is working on her next Oscar with Thatcher.

Now after garnering so many Academy awards and nominations Meryl Streep is still hungry for more. She is in talks to play Margaret Thatcher in Thatcher. The film will be directed by the people behind the lovable Mamma Mia. Her husband will be played by Jim Broadbent.

The film will be directed by Phyllida Lloyd. But this time around the script is not written by the talented Peter Morgan who is known for his work on The Queen. The film will try and examine the entire life and career of Thatcher, but analyze its subject through one point in history. It will include the 17 days that preceded the Falklands War in 1982. She lost a lot of her following after the massive unemployment rates, and also the infamous Irish hunger. It leads to several movies which were also against her policies like the recent Hunger and several others which concentrated on her bad career of sorts

It is a perfect role for Streep to take over and will go on to win a lot of acclaim for the woman. But it will probably also be quite dramatic which is not a good sign for the future of these biopics. Controversial figures are something what the Academy actually likes. But will the box office also ring true for this one like the last couple of hits Meryl Streep has had.

Thank you all for following us so religiously especially through the last post we put on this film Another Year. It is one of the more anticipated humanist films of this year called Another Year. The film is directed by Mike Leigh. The film was on the improvisation path for the last couple of years.

The film stars Jim Broadbent who can be seen in Mike Leigh’s early film called Topsy Turvy, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Ruth Sheen, Peter Wright and Oliver Maltman. The film has a smaller synopsis which talks about life and it’s broken up seasonal changes. A Lot of time is passing in the film which is a good thing.

But the Cannes website has given a way better synopsis than the last. They have also released some clips from the film as well.

Leigh’s methodology is kind of amazing and kind of insane. We just met an actress who worked with Leigh on “Vera Drake” for six months in his legendary deep-diving improvisation sessions and her screen time amounted to about one minute. But, it apparently doesn’t matter to Leigh, it’s all about learning who these characters are by living and breathing them night and day for several months. These clips don’t reveal too much, but they give you a flavor of what to expect. We’re sure they’re going to seem dull to some readers, but Leigh generally never fails to illuminate some corner of the human condition and we’re surely glad there’s some studios that care about films like these that are not in 3D and not aimed at the groin in your brain. Now if only this picture will be as good as Sally Hawkins and Eddie Marsan were in “Happy Go Lucky.”

The Damned United is a well made movie for England's Best Manager they never had.

When was the last time, anyone saw a football film made on a football manager who was one of the greatest football personalities of all time. Brian Howard Clough was the best manager in the world England never had. His name itself had controversies written all over it. But what he loved about the beautiful game, changed the face of English Football.

Michael Sheen is Brian Clough, a young successful manager who just takes charge of the best English team of his time Leeds United but his tenure lasted just 44 days. The movie has a parallel narrative with his high and lows as manager of two different clubs. Most part of the movie, Brian Clough is disgraced and humiliated but the film gains whatever it can from a person’s fall.

The film shows Clough as a flawed coach with all his ego, ambitions, abrasive and rash approach to dealing with people not to mention how a genius he was at football. Peter Taylor (Timothy Spall) as his assistant, is a man gifted with insight about players strengths and a perfect complement to the ambitious Clough. If Clough had half of the humility and humanity that Pete had, he would have become a greater manager much sooner.

Football fanatics whose love of the game attracts them to the cinema to see films about their beautiful game may feel let down by The Damned United. It is more of a thorough character analysis of a complex individual, which means fans of the sport wanting to see players in action may be somewhat disappointed. What The Damned United does provide, is a thought-provoking retrospective of the football industry in earlier years. Everyone is in character, so when the real people show up in the usual credit roll at the end, you could easily pick out the actor to match, so close even in appearance.

Michael Sheen, who has by now more than established himself as one of Britain’s finest actors of recent times. There are some moments in the film where you feel that he deserved some of it, but other moments you do feel sympathetic to his attitude of football which was the right way to go. For such a dynamic and potent character, Sheen had a shot on target and it was spot on.

Mike Leigh is running back to the scribbling board to make a classic.

Mike Leigh seems to jump right back to work after his ultra happy last film. The principal photography for his upcoming film has commenced in full zest. The film is being handled by Focus Features and the financing is being done UK Film Council’ Film4.

There has been a renewed interest in the director after his last film caught many of the critics unaware. The new film will also be shot around the same locales of Happy Go Lucky. The film stars a heady cast of British greats and hopefuls.

The stars include Michele Austin, David Bradley, Jim Broadbent, Philip Davis, Karina Fernandez, Oliver Maltman, Lesley Manville, Stuart McQuarrie, Martin Savage, Ruth Sheen, Imelda Staunton and Peter Wight. Now with Jim Broadbent and Imelda Staunton in the fray these will surely going to be a surprise package. I really hope it turns out to be as wild as his last offering. This film is billed to be a follow up to his last film. So for all the fans of his work this is surely different direction for the auteur.

Check out Michael Sheen in Brian Glough's reign of Leeds United in 'The Damned United'.

Football (Soccer) related movies have generally not done well in recent times, the ones that come to my mind are Green Street Hooligans and Goal! Trilogy. The problem with these movies are that they are always made on a tight production budget considering the fact that in US, the movie might not do well, resulting in a not so good cast, director which affects a films chances at the box office.

The Damned United looks like it might change the chances of a soccer movie with audiences from all over the world. Just two good reasons. Firstly, the cast is impressive. Michael Sheen to play Brian Clough (Coach of Leeds United Club team) is perfect and surely he will be supported in the best possible way by Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney and Jim Broadbent and Secondly, the screenplay is by Peter Morgan who is an Oscar Nominated writer for The Queen and Frost/Nixon. So, we know that the story will be gripping in every way and the career of Brian Clough does need something very emotional and gripping in order for the audience to appreciate it. The trailer is well made and is a must see for any soccer fan. Check it out below.
